The Bid
Synopsis:

Five cities are bidding for the right to host the 2012 Olympic Games: Madrid, Paris, Moscow, London and New York. All powerful and wealthy cities, it is widely perceived to be one of the most competitive bidding contests in Olympic history.
ANTJE DIPPENAAR works for Moran Associates, a private investigative firm in New York. Her job is to make sure that New York wins the Games by discrediting the other bids.
Immediately things go wrong in Madrid. Antje has arranged for a rentboy to seduce the head of the Madrid Bid Committee, JUVENTINO CORTÉS, in order to expose the hypocrisy of someone who presents himself as a committed family man in a deeply catholic country. Yet before the rentboy can seduce him, Cortés picks up a young Australian backpacker, PATRICK O'NEIL, who naively goes with Cortés to his apartment.
Knowing that Cortés will now be wary, it becomes imperative for Antje to find Patrick in order to use him to expose Cortés. Assuming that Patrick is gay, she is surprised to read in his e-mails that Patrick has met an English language student in Spain, ESME, and is following her to Paris. She sends her psychopathic colleague TYLER to find him.
With help, Patrick manages to escape Tyler in Paris and, as a result, Tyler is instructed by CONNOR MORAN, the head of Moran Associates, to implement Plan B: kill Patrick, and dump his body outside Cortés's apartment in Madrid. The ensuing scandal should be more than enough to derail the Madrid bid.
Patrick meanwhile, has travelled with Esme to Moscow. Now in love with Esme, he feels safe, the narrow escape from Tyler in Paris largely forgotten.
Antje realises that Moran is asking for her to be complicit in the murder of someone who appears to be innocent. She must decide whether she can continue to compromise her own moral code simply to facilitate Moran's greed, and her own profligate way of life. She therefore decides to find Patrick before Tyler can get to him, despite the possible consequences: not only will she lose her lifestyle in New York, but Moran will perhaps seek to kill her as well.
Tracing Patrick to Esme's home in London, she makes a plea for him to co-operate. Completely overwhelmed, Patrick can't decide what to do. While he is making his decision Tyler finds Patrick. Antje, who has been monitoring the house, bursts in to find Tyler about to dispose of Patrick. With Esme's help she manages to incapacitate Tyler and urges Esme to call the police. In order to completely safeguard Patrick and Esme, she gives full details to a London newspaper about the activities of Moran and his attempt to discredit the other bids.
Displaced, Antje returns to South Africa, to attempt some reconciliation with her estranged mother. With Moran's arrest in New York and Tyler's arrest in London she thinks she is safe. Yet Moran, determined to get his full revenge, hires a pair of thugs who rape and kill Antje's mother and leave Antje badly hurt.
The novel finishes with Esme and Patrick happily on holiday in Sicily with London announced as the winning city in the bid for the 2012 Olympics.
